MetroGreater

Small ideas can make Metro greater.

Feature local artists' work in stations

Invite local non-professional artists to submit works of art to be displayed safely in Metro stations for a period of time, say six months, then have new works displayed. Have a group of artists form a panel to choose the art to be displayed.

The only cost would be some form of physical protection for the art works. (Contest administrator note: The jury nominated this as a finalist, but also wanted to add a stipend for the artist.)

Also love the idea of using well known voices!

I love this idea. Makes Metro more vibrant, less anonymous. Art from the local community at each station would be wonderful.

Sorry, not a great idea. Charlottesville, VA has something like this call 'Art in Place' but more often than not, the general public thinks it is more 'Junk in Place'. Also, can you imagine the uproar if one of the pieces of 'art' was that crucifix in a aquarium of urine that the New York art museum called art a few years back. This is NOT a good idea.

I love the idea. I wish more cities would do this.

This would make daily commutes much more interesting. And maybe people would look up from their phones and actually have conversations!

I think this is a very good idea as long as the art is protected and maintained. I think the art should have some connection to the station where it's displayed.

Celebrating local non-professional art work is so very important and would add a wonderful community feel to Metro's space. Also you got to love the cost, or should I say lack of cost!

This idea is terrific and will be great outreach throughout the city. It will make riding Metro more pleasant for natives and tourists, young and old. Using local art also could be a great way to expose more of the DC population to talented students in DCPS and in charter schools, and also to adult student and art student work.
